Technology And Innovation: Enablers But Not Saviours Of The NHS

Technology and innovation are being invoked as saviours of an over-stretched NHS whose seventieth birthday is looming. Whether tele-consultation via GP at Hand™, direct-to-consumer genetic testing via 23andme™ or risk scores which use artificial intelligence via Google DeepMind™, the promise of these novel approaches seems compelling. On BBC Breakfast TV this week, Professor Tony Young, National Clinical Director of Innovation at NHS England, gave a refreshingly positive slant on how technology and innovation can change models of care, including genomic screening at population level and mobile phone applications to improve patient posture.

Bitcoin more important than iPhone to growth at some Asian firms

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co is one of hundreds of companies that have benefited by supplying components for Apple’s iPhone over the past 10 years. Now the world’s biggest maker of bespoke microchips may see digital currencies like Bitcoin become even more important for its growth.
TSMC stands to benefit big-time from a boom in cryptocurrency mining driven by bitcoin’s 1,400 per cent leap last year – the same explosive growth that’s bolstered shares of designers from Nvidia Corp to Advanced Micro Devices.

Startup is using heat generated from Bitcoin mining to grow food and fish

The hype surrounding cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin is fuelling speculation and a potential bubble that might burst around these decentralized digital currencies. But one of the biggest issues might not be a future crash, but the very real and immediate problem of how much electricity it takes to produce new units of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. The process of generating new Bitcoins is called "mining," and according to some experts, Bitcoin mining’s global energy consumption exceeds that of 159 countries combined (more than Ireland or Nigeria) or equal to Denmark alone.

CES 2018 wrap-up: Even more things to connect to Assistant

Two of the big trends at CES 2018 were AI and smart home stuff. The former was actually a major buzzword, and it became so overused that I stopped caring (thanks, Huawei/Honor). However, the smart home ecosystem continues to thrive and we saw a ton of new products that are launching with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. This post will focus on Assistant; you can expect the Alexa wrap-up a little bit later. Abode Systems Abode announced its all-in-one security system called iota.
